RGC rack up big score against in-form Bedwas

-

RGC were back to their best as they scored seven tries and gained a bonus point win, 45-17 away to in-form Bedwas.

Head coach Mark Jones said: “We executed our plays well, putting in the RGC imprint which was pleasing – scoring tries from a range of areas with the maul and good ball movement. As a group we have been looking at our attacking aspects, and we showed our ability to score both from the pack and the backs.

“Next week it is another test on our travels against a Llanelli side that have good players, even if their league position doesn’t show it at the moment. That is our next focus before we are back at Eirias for the Aberavon game.”

With the sun out and a dry track, RGC hit the ground running with a try in the opening minutes. The combination of Sam and Dion Jones set up scrum-half Efan Jones to touch down under the posts. Billy McBryde nudged the conversion over.

The hosts reduced the score with a penalty from Joseph Scrivens. Dion Jones cleared with the boot a couple of times, with RGC’s defensive exit working well.

Some fast hands from RGC created chances out wide, and Sam Jones was testing the defence with his pace. Try number two came from the forwards, and the maul rumbled over the line with Evan Yardley getting the score. McBryde again was on form with the extras.

RGC were playing with confidence and that was seen with the next try. Iolo Evans broke the line to create a gap before a sublime pass from the back of his hand to winger Sam Jones, who raced down the line to touchdown. Another conversion from McBryde extended the lead. The visitors created some more chances before Harri Evans skipped through the tackles to run in under the post for the bonus-point try – a simple kick for McBryde.

Bedwas did get back in the game with tries before and after half-time with Richards and Crane grabbing them. Scrivens hit both conversions to bring them within 11 points.

It was an open game with both sides creating some space, but it was RGC who took advantage after they worked the ball to Sam Jones to claim his second try of the day.

RGC were looking comfortable with ball in hand and also around the set piece. The scrum and line-out were giving a good platform. Danny Cross got onto the scoresheet with a try, again after some good phase play.

The final score was again down to the pack, as they powered to the line before the referee gave the penalty try.
