SPI­DER-MAN: INTO THE SPI­DER-VERSE (PG) ★★★★★

DAZ­ZLING com­puter-an­i­mated ad­ven­ture. When Miles Mo­rales (voiced by Shameik Moore) is bit­ten by a ra­dioac­tive spi­der, the high school stu­dent in­her­its the same abil­i­ties as the re­cently de­ceased Spi­der-Man (Chris Pine). Crime lord Wil­son Fisk (Liev Schreiber) is con­duct­ing ex­per­i­ments which dis­rupt the space-time con­tin­uum. Con­se­quently, a washed-up Peter B Parker (Jake John­son), Spi­der-Gwen (Hailee Ste­in­feld), Spi­derHam (John Mu­laney), Spi­der-Noir (Ni­co­las Cage) and in­ven­tor Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) ma­te­ri­alise and team up with Miles, left, to de­feat a host of vil­lains.

AQUA­MAN (12) ★★★★★

DC COMICS su­per­hero ori­gin story. Light­house keeper Thomas Curry (Te­muera Morrison) dis­cov­ers At­lanna (Ni­cole Kidman), Queen of At­lantis, in­jured and nurses her back to health. They fall in love and she gives birth to a boy called Arthur, who can breathe in wa­ter and com­mu­ni­cate with aquatic life. Alas, the queen is forced to aban­don her child. Years later, Mera (Am­ber Heard), daugh­ter of King Nereus (Dolph Lund­gren), vis­its Arthur (Ja­son Mo­moa, left) and im­plores him to chal­lenge his power-hun­gry half-brother Orm (Patrick Wil­son), who has de­clared war on hu­man­ity.

MOR­TAL ENGINES (12) ★★★★★

AC­TION ad­ven­ture. Cen­turies af­ter the Sixty Minute War, sur­vivors hud­dle on mo­bile me­trop­o­lises fash­ioned from scav­enged parts. The largest of these is Lon­don, com­manded by Mayor Mag­nus Crome (Patrick Malahide) with guid­ance from aca­demic Thad­deus Valen­tine (Hugo Weav­ing). Masked as­sas­sin Hester Shaw (Hera Hil­mar, left) tries to kill Valen­tine but ap­pren­tice his­to­rian Tom Natswor­thy (Robert Shee­han) in­ter­venes. Dur­ing the sub­se­quent chase, he tum­bles off a gang­way and re­gains con­scious­ness next to Hester in the wilder­ness. The fugi­tives are soon forced to work to­gether.
