Llangefni seal fifth Alliance league title
LLANGEFNI Town secured their fifth Welsh Alliance League title with an emphatic 2-0 win against title rivals Bodedern Athletic.
In front of a bumper crowd at Talwrn Road, Llangefni needing just to avoid a heavy defeat went 1-0 ahead on 22 minutes, Kevin Lloyd’s 25-yard free-kick finding the top left hand corner of the net, Athletic’s keeper Taylor had no chance.
Moments later Matthew Jones was through on goal, his chip going over the outrunning Taylor to make it 2-0 and beyond the reach of Bodedern.
Following the title success, chairman Alwyn Jones said: “What a fantastic achievement! Congratulations to Chris, the players, management and coaching staff and thank you everyone for your fantastic support.
“We have another final to look forward to versus Llanrwst United on 11 May at Conwy. 2pm kickoff, then our efforts will go on preparations for next season.
“We now have to wait until 10 May for FAW’s decision on Tier Two Certification and promotion to the newly formed Championship North for next season.
“We have submitted our application and are quite confident the certification and promotion will be achieved.”
Manager Chris Jones said it was a great way to end the league season and was pleased with the way his side carried out the game plan.
This season has been a spectacular season for the club at both senior and junior level. The first team has a real chance of promotion, it has put up outstanding performances in all cup competitions notably beating Llanelli from the Welsh Premier Leafgue 1-0 in the Welsh Cup before going out to another Welsh Premier side Llandudno in the last 16.
There was success in the Cookson Cup Final in March beating Penrhyndeudraeth 1-0.
The reserve team is steadily progressing and the juniors have had success with the under 16s winning their league for the second year in succession and the North Wales Coast Cup.
They are also involved in two other Cup Finals and the under 14s have also won their league for the second year in succession.
