RESTRAINED historical drama. In 1561, a Protestant queen, Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie), rules England. Her power is threatened by the return of her Catholic cousin Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) from France, who many English Catholics believe is the legitimate heir to the throne. Elizabeth’s adviser William Cecil (Guy Pearce) suggests controlling Mary through a marriage, but Mary chooses her first cousin, Lord Darnley (Jack Lowden), and they produce a son and heir, James. While figures close to Mary plot against her, men in Elizabeth’s court try to manoeuvre their monarch on to a path of civil war.
