Former golf shop to be pizza restaurant

-

A FORMER golf shop looks set to become a pizza restaurant and takeaway after being given the go-ahead by planners.

A meeting of Anglesey Council’s Planning Committee approved the bid put forward by Mathew Wharton, who runs the driving range adjacent to Oriel Môn in Llangefni.

The golf shop was formerly part of the loss-making nine hole golf course which was shut last year, with Anglesey Council planning to sell the 42 acre site and reinvest the proceeds into its statutory services.

But Mr Wharton’s plans for the now closed golf shop include the installation of an external flue and decking, which were recommended for approval by planning officers.

Despite this, some members of the planning committee raised concerns over the proposals, citing its proximity to Oriel Môn and its on-site cafe which was recently taken over by the Hospice at Home charity.

“There is a retrospective element to this development as some work has already started,” said Cllr Bryan Owen.

“Do we really want to see a fast food outlet right on the doorstep of Oriel Môn? The driving range already looks like a scrap metal yard already with all those cars.

“I accept there was a shop there, but this is a fast food outlet and is a totally different usage.

“I don’t think its appropriate at all.” Cllr Owen requested that members go out on a site visit but failed to gain the support of the committee and the plan was approved.
