Bangor stay on top of Prem with win at Pwllheli

- Harri Evans

BANGOR retained their status as league leaders this week with an away win over Pwllheli.

The visitors showed why they deserve to be at the top of the Premier Division on Saturday afternoon as they secured a 10-wicket win at Parc Bodegroes.

Morgan Murray-Williams won the toss for Pwllheli and elected to bat.

Unfortunately for them, the Bangor bowlers were in inspired form, particularly Franco Kasner who secured 6 wickets (increasing his tally for the season to 22) as well as 2 maidens.

Contributions from team-mate Nadeem Rehman (2 wickets, 3 maidens) helped ensure victory for the table toppers who now sit on level points with Denbigh with 89 points.

Only four batsmen were required by Bangor to seal the result with Owen Reilly leading the way for the visitors, hitting 40 not out. David Winter (16), Idrees Ijaz (26) and Nadeem Rehman (4 not out) complete the list.

Elsewhere in the league, St Asaph were victorious against Connah’s Quay, scoring 115-01 (23.5 overs) as their opponents were 113 all out (39.2 overs).

St Asaph elected to field after captain William Ryan won the toss. This proved to reflect the strength of their bowlers as Jason Foulkes and Alex Baker took 4 wickets apiece with Liam Moores and Duncan Midgley securing the other two.

Spectators at Connah’s Quay cricket ground witnessed a memorable batting performance from St Asaph’s Duncan Midgley who hit an impressive 86 runs from 79 balls not out, adding to his total of 270 for the season and essentially securing the result for the visitors.

The result leaves Connah’s Quay languishing at the bottom of the Premier Division with seven points as they appear to be early favourites for the drop.

St Asaph on the other hand are currently fifth, trailing league leaders Bangor by 19 points.

Second place Denbigh were also in action on Saturday as they took on Brymbo.

Denbigh won the toss and elected to field at Ystrad Road.

Jack Griffiths led the bowling charts for Denbigh, striking 4 maidens and 2 wickets. This proved to be his only involvement in the game as only four batsmen were required to secure the result for the league’s joint top leaders.

Harrison Jones was top scorer for the day as he hit 60 runs from 77 balls not out. Gerallt Lyall (17), Jon Eccles (6) and Sam Lewis (7 not out) were the other batsmen for Denbigh.

It was not a great away day for Brymbo who still remain in the relegation zone with 25 points.

Captain James Claybrook added to his tally however with 42 runs bringing his total for the season up to 285.

This will be of little solace to Brymbo as they now sit 17 points behind 10th placed Pontblyddyn.

On surer footing going into the weekend’s fixtures were Mochdre and Llandudno, starting and finishing the weekend at fourth and sixth respectively.

The match was tightly contested as Mochdre ran out eventual winners by 15 runs. Both teams were all out with Jack Rimmington (3 maidens and 5 wickets) and Gareth Goodson (4 maidens and 5 wickets) leading the charts for Llandudno and Mochdre respectively.

It was not a great day for the batsmen as Alex Davies (Mochdre) and Jack Rimmington (Llandudno) were joint topscorers with 17.

Despite this, it was a good result for Mochdre who are now only eight points behind league leaders Bangor.
