McGinness leaves Holyhead for Port

- Motor sport Football

THE Warrington and District Motor Club make their annual pilgrimage to Anglesey Circuit this coming Sunday, 30th June for the 30th running of the JRT Enville Stage Rally.

The event includes rounds of championships run by the Association Pic: Neil Lambert of North Western Car Clubs, Association Northern Western Car Clubs, Welsh Association of Motor Clubs, Association of West Midlands Car Clubs and the SD34 MSG Stage Rally Championships.

With a full entry and ten stages covering 50 miles, this rally promises a full day of action. HOLYHEAD Hotspur talisman Mel McGinness has ended his glittering spell with the club after agreeing to join Porthmadog.

The talented forward has opted to stay in FAW Championship North after initially agreeing to remain at The New Stadium following their relegation from the second tier, with Port officially confirming the news late on Sunday evening.

McGinness was one of the standout performers in an otherwise disappointing season for the Holy Islanders’ last term, which saw him scoop Huws Gray Alliance Player of the Year after receiving the most man of the matches from opposing sides. He netted eight league goals throughout the season for Darren Garmey’s men, with arguably his finest performance coming in their impressive victory over derby rivals Bangor City.

The popular figure has enjoyed a phenomenal summer as part of the Ynys Môn squad at the Huws Gray Inter-Island Games tournament, turning in a series of exceptional displays and netted the winner to secure gold in front of more than 3,000 spectators at his former Holyhead base.

The news comes as a significant boost to a Port squad that has lost a number of influential players over the off-season including the likes of Julian Williams and Sion Edwards.

Port manager Sion Eifion said: “He (McGinness) joins us after a fantastic week at the Island Games which will no doubt give him great confidence going into the new season. He’s a proven goalscorer at this level who is a nightmare for any defender. I’m sure he’ll grow to be a favourite with the Port faithful.”
