London beat Improving Island tourism and attractions a win-win

- With Anglesey MP Albert Owen

THE excellent weather allows us to get out and about and enjoy the great outdoors.

As an Island we are unique and blessed with a diverse coastline. Tourism is the fastest growing industry and brings a boost to local economies.

The Anglesey and North Wales brand is growing and improving in quality; from food and drink to a wide range of activities and leisure pursuits.

As a keen casual walker, the coastal path is a gem. That is not just my opinion but the view of the numerous and ever-increasing visitors and locals who I meet while walking the path.

Such casual activities, combined with our marine sports, are good for our health and wellbeing, as well as bringing social and economic benefits.

Tourism growth does bring with it many challenges to the local and regional infrastructure. Our transport systems feel

the strain. We do need to be more innovative to deal with the increase tourism places on our roads / railway etc as well as on our emergency services. Our coastline needs extra emergency provision and I hope the MCA is able to restore local auxiliary coastguard teams to acceptable levels. I pay tribute to all our lifesavers, both professional and voluntary. Safety is paramount.

Supporting local tourism is vital, and I encourage local people on occasions to visit local amenities and enjoy the Island’s beauty instead of travelling further afield.

Anglesey has attractions for everyone. In addition, on our doorstep, the Zip Wire is a major draw to North Wales and I welcome Island resident Greg Evans to his new role as Operations Manager of the Zip World Group, Greg will promote the whole region as well as this excellent venture.

In the House of Commons I often speak about and promote our Island community. This week I spoke in the debate on Red Squirrels and their habitat. Anglesey has a successful conservation project, which boosts the species, the local environment and tourism. In addition, I recently met the Forestry Department of Bangor University at Westminster, they are internationally renowned and provide quality jobs and training locally.

With Climate Change rightly high on the agenda, we should aim to enhance and improve our environment and tourist attractions. It is a win-win for the local community. Creating a healthier more prosperous Island is a key objective, which would benefit all of us.
