A PROFESSIONAL footballer from North Wales has revealed he is battling cancer.

Bala Town midfielder Danny Gosset, from Bangor, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, last month.

The former pupil at Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen in Caernarfon, who is receiving treatment at Christie Hospital in Manchester, made the announcement last week.

In a statement published on the Bala Town Football Club website, he revealed how he suspected something was wrong during the Europa League play-offs after suffering an “unusual” pain in his leg.

It was when his physiotherapist encouraged him to have further tests that he discovered he had cancer.

The statement says: “In August this year I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.

“Since the diagnosis, I have already started treatment at Christie Hospital in Manchester and count myself lucky that I’m able to get the best possible care to overcome this.

“The support I’ve received since the diagnosis has been incredible and I’m truly grateful to everyone who has been in contact.

“During the Europa League play-offs, I suspected something was wrong as I was suffering from an unusual pain in my left leg. After weeks of rest during the close season unfortunately, nothing changed.

“I would like to thank Ffiona Evans, our physiotherapist at Bala CPD for encouraging me to have further tests.

“This encouragement led to the diagnosis.

“A massive thank you also to everyone at Bala Town, from the manager and players to all the staff for their support over these past few months.

“I’m proud to be part of this special club and will do everything in my power to be back on the pitch at Maes Tegid as soon as possible.

“Diolch. Daniel Gosset.” Since publishing the statement, dozens of wellwishes have poured in for the midfielder, who will celebrate his 25th birthday at the end of the month.

In a statement published on the Bala Town FC Facebook page, the club said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you for all your messages of support for Danny –we appreciate every single one.”

Gosset, 24, has represented Wales at C level, making his international debut in March 2018 against England.

He began his career with Oldham Athletic and made two appearances in the Football League before his release.

Between 2013 and 2014, following a spell on loan with Stockport County, he was signed to play for Rhyl the following season, making his Welsh Premier League debut.

He later played for TNS, before signing for Bangor City in June 2016 until last season.
