ABRAND of crisps containing sea salt from North Wales has been recalled by their manufacturer, the Food Standards Agency has revealed.

The precautionary step has been taken by Pipers Crisps Ltd because varieties of its products may contain Listeria monocytogenes.

Symptoms caused by this organism can include muscle ache, chills as well as nausea and diarrhoea.

The products, which are gluten-free and vegan, are sold by retailers including Amazon and online supermarket Ocado.

The award-winning company, based in rural Lincolnshire, is recalling two varieties of crisps – including its Anglesey Sea Salt range.

The being two varieties of crisps recalled by the company are the Anglesey Sea Salt and Karnataka Black Pepper.

The recalled products are: Anglesey Sea Salt (20g and 40g) packs with the batch code L4 19252 and a best before date of 27/01/20

Anglesey Sea Salt (40g) pack with the batch code L4 19253 and a best before date of 28/01/20

The Food Standards Agency warns consumers not to eat any of the above products. Instead, customers should return them to the store from where they bought them in exchange for a full refund – even without a receipt.

The Lincolnshire-based company, which was founded in 2004, distributes its products to retailers in the UK as well as exporting its crisps to Europe and the US.

David Lea-Wilson – one of the founders of Anglesey Sea Salt / Halen Mon issued a statement which says: “We would like to emphasise that Listeria does not grow in sea salt – quite the opposite – salt kills bacteria.

“We are able to reassure our customers that this product recall by one of our good customers, Pipers Crisps, will relate to something else that has no possible sea salt origin.

“Listeria is most often found in vegetables or soft cheese or dairy products.

“Our salt production building and process is retested annually and achieved the highest possible quality and safety grading in July 2019 called BRC GRADE AA, which proves that we meet the highest standards possible for any food factory in the UK.”
