1876 through in Junior Cup after extra-time win

-

AFTER having exited the Welsh Cup and FAW Trophy this month, Bangor 1876 ensured that they will be present in the third round of the North Wales Coast FA Junior Cup following an extra time win against a well-organised and spirited Llanfairfechan Town side, writes JONATHAN ERVINE.

1876 took the lead through Dylan Williams in the eighth minute after the midfielder finished neatly from the edge of the box after the ball was played into his path from the right wing by Jamie Petrie.

Five minutes before the break, Williams came close to adding a second goal after beating several opponents before shooting narrowly wide from a central position just outside the penalty area.

With three minutes left of the opening period, Jamie Petrie also came close as he turned neatly on the edge of the six-yard area but his shot was blocked.

At half-time it was 1-0 to Bangor 1876.

In the early stages of the second period, Summers-Jones twice came close to scoring with shots from outside the penalty area, and only a sharp intervention from 1876’s right back Dafydd Thomas stopped a Llanfairfechan attacker breaking through into the box.

However, the visitors did draw level after 56 minutes.

A free-kick was swung into the box and Sion Devereux rose well to score with a header.

In a fairly even second period, Summers-Jones hit the bar for 1876 after showing some neat footwork.

At the other end, an excellent save at full stretch by 1876’s Leon Jones prevented Llanfairfechan from taking the lead as the goalkeeper pushed a shot from outside the area around the post.

As the clock ticked down, 1876 created some late chances.

The best opportunity fell to Cian Williams on the edge of the Llanfairfechan six-yard box but he couldn’t keep his shot down as the match finished all-square after 90 minutes.

At the start of extra time, 1876 showed renewed urgency and sought to stretch their visitors by seeking to move the ball around more swiftly.

Their efforts paid off two minutes before the end of the first half of extra time as Summers-Jones broke into the left side of the penalty area before curling a low right-footed shot past the visiting goalkeeper.

The scorer of 1876’s second goal turned provider just after the start of the second period of extra-time as he broke down the right wing and played the ball into the box towards Petrie, who turned and scored with a sharp right-footed finish from eight yards out.

Summers-Jones crowned a fine performance with the goal of the game three minutes from the end of extra time as he made it 4-1 with a powerful first-time shot from the right side of the penalty area.

The scoreline was ultimately somewhat harsh on the visitors, who contributed to a highly exciting cup tie that saw Bangor 1876 progress to the Third Round of the NWCFA Junior Cup.

CPD Bangor 1876 have announced that a pop-up Christmas Shop will be open inside the Deiniol Centre in Bangor.

The Christmas Shop will be open from 9am on Friday, December 6 and a range of merchandise products will be available and the full range is also available to purchase.
