Cefni suffer last-gasp loss at Caernarfon

EIFION HARDING.

Cefni had attacked from the off and it was no surprise when strong running centre Gethin Jones ploughed over close to the posts after eight minutes, that also offered Rhys Hughes an easy conversion.

From the restart fullback Greg Horsman was able to waltz through and on eventually being halted, found strong ball carrying loose forward Cai Oliver at hand to drive through the rest of the cover to crash over, an effort that was again converted by Rhys Hughes.

Cefni remained in the ascendancy and prop Bedwyr Williams picked up at the base, following a series of drives close to the try line before detaching to ground out wide at the end of the first quarter.

The Cofis were in need of inspiration and Aled Jones as stand-off offered some hope as he at least proved that the Cefni defence could be breached.

At last a period of sustained pressure saw an attack halted illegally that also reduced the Islanders numbers to 14 for 10 minutes as a result.

During this period the Cofis began to find a foothold in Cefni territory and the quick thinking of Carwyn Roberts, who punted through deftly before re-gathering was able to dive over in the corner to finally bring a reason for the Cofi faithful to cheer.

Within the first three minutes of the second half, Carwyn Roberts scampered clear to score his second of the day in the corner.

Further uplift was provided by an excellent touchline conversion from Aled Jones.

Then Gareth Pritchard broke free and his final pass releasing Rhodri Jones to sprint into the corner once again.

Caernarfon were reduced to 14 for another yellow card infringement, and Cefni took advantage as Oliver ploughed over once again near the sticks whilst also affording Rhys Hughes another conversion.

Caernarfon trailing by nine points once again had Carwyn Roberts to thank for coming to their rescue as his break and good follow up play resulted in a five pointer being granted to Steffan Prebble.

Aled Jones again slotted the conversion and then a penalty to give Caernarfon a narrow victory and Cefni’s misery was compounded as wing Gethyn Andrews was shown a late yellow card.
