Hotspurs in 5-4 win at Llanrwst in trophy

WITH both sides scoring bonus point tries and just two points separating the teams after 80 minutes Llangefni just edged out Ruthin 33-31, writes JOHN PALMER.

Josh Wilson scored Ruthin’s opening try but the home side responded almost immediatel­y with a penalty goal from Rhys Hughes.

Ruthin widened the gap again within five minutes with a well worked try by centre Jamie Jones which he converted.

Cefni came back again and with their quick ball and strong forwards play were back over the visitors’ whitewash with an unconverte­d try from Aron Jeffries.

Ruthin second row Chris Davies scored with Jones converting, but again Cefni responded and after some pressure Hughes kicked a penalty goal.

The score was 19-11 to Ruthin after 30 minutes and for the last 10 minutes of the first half the game became a bit scrappy.

After the break,

Ruthin’s pack were camped on Cefni’s try line and hooker Liam Davies stretched over for the bonus point try.

At 24-11 it looked as though the visitors were in control, but Cefni had other ideas and in a 10 minutes spell scrum half Aled Jones and hooker Alex Phillips scored a try each, which Hughes converted as well as kicking a penalty goal and the home side were in the lead 26-24.

The Blues then went down to 14 men with a red card.

Cefni pressed home their advantage and Cai Oliver scored their bonus point try with

Hughes converting.

Ruthin had the final word when Cameron Lumsden scored and Jones converted to set up a tense finale.

CHRIS Jones scored a hattrick as Holyhead Hotspur went through to the FAW Trophy quarter-finals with a heart-stopping 5-4 victory at Llanrwst United.

Dewi Thomas and Deian Parry were also on target for Hotspurs.

In the Welsh Alliance Division One, Mynydd Llandegai suffered late agony as Keating HoePike’s 93rd minute winner clinched a dramatic 2-1 success for Glan Conwy.

Alwyn Roberts had earlier put Mynydd in front, before Conor Davies levelled for Glan.

Dean Redmond and Shaun Jenkins both scored twice to secure Bodedern Athletic a superb 4-1 verdict at Llanrug United.

Mike Parry, Steve Jenkins and Nathan Moore (2, 1 pen) ensured Aberffraw beat Amlwch Town 4-1 in Division Two, Luke McGivern netting for the visitors.

Bottom side Pentraeth held leaders Penmaenmaw­r Phoenix to a goalless draw and it was also 0-0 between Gaerwen and Llannefydd.

Craig Evans scored a consolatio­n as Gwalchmai were beaten 3-1 by Llandudno Junction

In the Reserves Division, Llangefni Town versus Llanberis finished 1-1 with Dion Owen putting Cefni ahead.

Trearddur Bay Bulls remain second in the Gwynedd League following a 5-1 hammering of Bro Goronwy.

Justin Williams (2), Gwynfor Owen, Iolo Jones and Hywel Jones shared the home goals, Jordan Edney replying.

Glantraeth defeated Caergybi 3-1, top-scorer Brad Bland with a brace for the hosts, who also benefited from an own goal.

The returning Owen was the marksman.

Wayne Jones and Gavin Davies (pen) struck for Talysarn Celts in a 2-0 success against Llangoed.

Waunfawr saw off Llannerchy­medd 4-1 after Sion Pritchard had put the Anglesey visitors ahead.

Holyhead Hotspur Reserves were far too strong for local rivals Holyhead Town, winning 6-0 in the Anglesey League Dargie Cup.

Tom Scott netted twice, with Casey Gregg, Coby Doutch, Alex Hebenstrei­t and an own goal making up the six.
