Lights mark Captain Tom’s 100th birthday
WHEN local schoolboy Elis Owen saw the work of Captain Tom Moore he was inspired to raise money for a cause close to his heart.
The Darby Rimmer MND Foundation was created to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a condition which sadly caused the passing of Elis’ grandfather 10 years ago.
When the Liverpool FC fan realised one of his heroes, Stephen Darby, was suffering from the same condition as his grandfather, he came up with a challenge to help him raise funds for the charity.
The seven-year-old from Penrhos in Bangor, Gwynedd, kicked off his challenge on Monday, May 1, and aimed to run 5km per day all the way
PREMIER Inn Holyhead, lit up its hotel windows in tribute of Captain Tom’s 100th Birthday on Thursday, April 30, and shone its lights to mark the centenary birthday for the fundraising veteran.
Oliver Gibbs-Murray, Hotel Manager, said: through to the end of the month.
Elis’ father, Gethyn Owen, said part way through the month: “Elis has so far has completed 14 runs totalling 70km, and by the end he will have run 155km.
“He is doing really well and even went running today after having a tummy bug last night.
“He is a massive football fan and player and is missing football massively, but this is filling a void for him.”
Elis has so far raised over £2,300 for the MND charity, which will help to support families affected by the disease, as well as contributing to vital research.

“Everyone across the UK is so proud of what Captain Tom has achieved, and we wanted to do something that would show how much we appreciate this as well as celebrating and honouring him on his landmark birthday.”
