RIVER Cottage team member Gill Meller’s debut, Gather, was a beautiful slow burn of a book ... and told us we should all be eating squirrel.

Time: A Year And A Day In The Kitchen (Quadrille, £25) sees him reminisce about the kitchens that have nurtured and welcomed him, and looks at cooking through the prism of morning, day and night.

Dishes include everything from simple breakfasts like buckwheat pancakes, to lunches of chicken with chamomile, main meals like roast pheasant with parsnips and chorizo, and desserts such as quince and vanilla crème brûlée.
