Anglesey workers shocked as jobs ‘going to Liverpool’

FIRM RECEIVED OVER £100K LAST YEAR FROM WELSH GOVERNMENT

- Owen Hughes

WORKERS say they’ve been left “shocked” after allegedly being told jobs are to be relocated from Anglesey to Liverpool.

Staff told our sister paper, the Daily Post that 27 roles are understood to be going at the Joloda Hydraroll manufacturing site in Gaerwen.

The company – which last year received £80,000 from the Welsh Government Economy Futures Fund and £26,500 from the Economic Resilience Fund – has not responded to requests to comment.

Unite the Union said it was due to speak to the firm, a specialist in the automated loading of freight for air cargo, road transport containers and shipping.

Ynys Mon Senedd member Rhun ap Iorwerth has also been pressing to speak to management after being contacted about job losses.

He has also asked Economy minister Ken Skates to get involved in a bid to protect jobs.

One staff member said: “We are shocked at this.

“If we were doing badly you would understand but we have been busier than ever, it has come out of nowhere.”

Mr ap Iorwerth said: “We understand that there are plans from Joloda to move jobs from Gaerwen here on Anglesey to Liverpool, I am very concerned about this, as are the constituents who have got in touch with me already about this.

“Joloda is an important employer on Anglesey and has been for many years.”

He added: “I hope to speak to the company and have contacted them, and I’m also writing to the Welsh Government to ask for immediate intervention to try to save these jobs.”

Last year the firm said the money from Welsh Government had allowed it to extend two areas of its operations in Gaerwen, build a dedicated trailer park and upgrade equipment – with £240,000 of their own money invested.

Ynys Mon MP Virginia Crosbie said: “It is incredibly disappointing to hear that 25 production jobs are to be relocated to Speke.

“I have communicated with Michele Dematteis the Joloda MD and spoken with Paddy McNaught at Unite.

“Any proposed job losses on our island are devastating news.

“After decades of disinvestment our young people need good quality jobs so they can buy a home, bring up their families, keep our communities together and the Welsh language and culture vibrant.

“This is why I am fighting for Anglesey to be a free port which will encourage much needed investment and bring new job opportunities to our island.”
