New estate is given go-ahead
PLANS to build a new housing estate on the outskirts of an Anglesey village have been approved by planners despite some local opposition.
Members of the authority’s planning committee backed a bid to build nine homes at Y Bryn, Llanfaethlu, each offering either two or three bedrooms.
Two of the nine will be designated as affordable, with the remainder set to go on the open market.
The plans were approved despite some local reservations over land drainage issues.
According to the local community council, while they had no issue with a new estate of houses, some residents were said to be “already worried about standing water
around their houses and gardens,” and with the new housing estate set to be higher than theirs, local councillors noted it was “only natural for them to worry about the water situation.”
As a result, they sought assurance that the measures proposed would be sufficient.
But planning officers recommended approval, noting that permission was already in place for six homes on the site, felt that the new proposals
would also be acceptable with a surface water and drainage strategy having been proposed as part of the application.
Noting the local concerns, which also included site access arrangements, it was noted that the council’s highways department shared no similar fears.
In response, local councillor Ken Hughes told Wednesday’s committee meeting: “I’m happy to second the proposal as long as officers are happy with the capacity of the sewerage and drainage arrangements, I think those two things were the aspects that worried most local people the most.”
The officers’ summing up added: “The principle of developing the application for 6 residential units would appear to have been established since 2007 and it appears that there is an extant planning permission on the application site.
“Having regard to the development plans and all material considerations the proposal for 9 dwellings is considered acceptable subject to conditions recommended. As explained in the committee report a separate SAB application will be required in relation to surface water drainage proposals.” The plans were approved unanimously.
