Huge ship drops anchor off N. Wales
A HUGE cargo ship docked off the coast of North Wales – with high winds touted as a possible reason.
The Clementine, a Belgian vessel, had been at anchor in the Irish Sea off Trearddur Bay since Easter Monday (April 5).
The roll-on/roll-off ship (also known as a Ro-Ro ship) which is used to transport cars, trucks and similar vehicles, docked off the coast of the Anglesey village due to the weather conditions.
A training ship was sent to survey the vessel from Holyhead last Tuesday morning. The 162m-long Clementine was stationary near the island’s southern coast. The ship was travelling to Liverpool from Santander in Spain, and was set to reach its destination at 9.45am on Wednesday.
There were suggestions among some residents the vessel was there as part of a naval exercise, but a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence has since denied this.
