Trucker arrested over fatal crash
Local HGV driver, 38, quizzed as second man seriously injured
A 52-YEAR-OLD man from Anglesey was killed in a four-vehicle crash on the A55 which shut the Britannia Bridge.
Two-way traffic on the bridge finally restarted at around 4.15pm on Thursday after huge congestion built up in the surrounding area.
North Wales Police (NWP) have confirmed the man who died in Thursday morning’s crash was Marc Winston Roberts (see below).
His next of kin have been informed and police said they are being supported by a specially trained family liaison officer. Another man was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, and remains in hospital with serious injuries.
Officers arrested a 38-year-old local HGV driver on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Sgt Jason Diamond of the NWP Roads Policing Unit is appealing for witnesses who may have been travelling along the A55 just prior to the collision, which happened shortly before 3am.
Motorists with dashcam footage of the incident are asked to contact officers.
Sgt Diamond said: “I am aware of the significant delays on the road network and I would like to thank the motoring public for their continued patience.
“Throughout the day we have been working with partner agencies to reopen the road as soon as possible and this work continues.
“Our investigation is well under way and I am appealing to anybody who may have witnessed the collision and who are yet to speak to us, or to anybody who may have dash cam footage, to contact us as soon as possible.”
One lane on the A55 eastbound carriageway was reopened shortly before 12.30pm.
Anglesey-bound traffic was diverted via the Menai Bridge crossing, leading to long queues on the A487 and in Bangor town centre.
A westbound lane on the Britannia Bridge was opened around 4.15pm as emergency repairs to the bridge continued to be carried out.
The NWP Forensic Collision Investigation Unit is continuing to establish the circumstances of the collision.
Anybody who may be able to help with the ongoing investigation into the accident is urged to contact officers at the Roads Policing Unit by calling 101, or via the website, quoting reference number B008693.
