Heartfelt congratulations to our monarch, who has kept her pledge of service to the nation for 70 diligent years
London beat
R SOEDD dydd Sul 6ed Chwefror yn nodi 70 mlynedd ers i’w Mawrhydi y Frenhines Elizabeth esgyn i’r orsedd. UNDAY 6 February marked the 70-year anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ascending to the throne.
Her pledge at the time of her coronation was that her ‘whole life, whether it be long or short,’ would be devoted to the service of the nation.
It is beyond contention that she has kept that promise and that she has done so over the last 70 years with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of diligence and concern for her country and the Commonwealth.
It is staggering to think that her time on the throne began when Truman, Stalin and Churchill were still in power!
No other contemporary head of state has comparable experience - and it is notable that for decades now, Prime Ministers from both parties have made a point of praising her ability to offer astute, though apolitical, advice on a wide range of issues.
Anglesey enjoys strong links with the Royal Family, and I know that so many of you feel immense pride that our future King and his wife had their first home here when he was serving at RAF Valley as a search and rescue pilot.
The people of our island united to protect the privacy of the young couple, and it is no wonder that they, like everyone who has had the good fortune to call Anglesey home, look back on their time here with such happiness.
I have long campaigned for more women to enter politics and, as I reflect on my personal professional and political journey, I am moved by the words written by Margaret Roberts in 1952.
She had already stood as the youngest woman candidate in the last two General Elections and she was just a few months older than Her Majesty.
Writing in celebration of the Queen’s accession, she wrote:
“A young Queen, the loveliest ever to reign over us, now occupies
the highest position in the land.
“If, as many earnestly pray, the accession of Elizabeth II can help to remove the last shreds of prejudice against women aspiring to the highest places, then a new era for women will indeed be at hand. We owe it to the Queen — and to the memory of her father who set her such a wonderful example throughout his life — to play our part with increasing enterprise in the years ahead.
“I hope we shall see more and more women combining marriage and a career. Prejudice against this dual role is not confined to men. Far too often, I regret to say, it comes from our own sex. But the happy management of home and career can and is being achieved.”
The earnest prayers of Margaret Roberts who, as Margaret Thatcher, would go on to become our first female Prime Minister, have been more than realised and this is just one of the myriad of ways in which Queen Elizabeth 2nd has made such an invaluable contribution to public life, to our nation and to the Commonwealth.
On behalf of the people of Anglesey I extend our most heartfelt congratulations to Her
Majesty on the Platinum Jubilee of her reign.
Eich mawrhydi, llongyfarchiadau ar 70 mlynedd ers eich teyrnasiad!
The Queen has visited Anglesey several times and has always received a warm welcome.
Her first official visit was in 1958 and she came again for her Silver and Golden Jubilee tours. Her most recent visit was in 2011 when she came to RAF Valley to see her grandson at work.
As your Member of Parliament I recognise the importance of high profile visits to Ynys Môn and I am doing all I can to bring senior officials here to see our island’s potential.
Later this week I will be welcoming the Australian High Commissioner, His Excellency George Brandis QC, who is coming here to meet with our farmers and food producers following the recent Australia/uk Trade Deal.
He will also be the guest of honour at a fundraising dinner I am hosting to raise funds for the Anglesey Agricultural Society.
Just a few weeks ago we had the first visit of a Prime Minister
for 14 years and last week I spoke with the Energy Minister, Rt Hon Greg Hands MP, about his proposed visit in the spring.
Bringing Ministers and officials to our island means that they see first-hand the opportunities here.
The Prime Minister now knows what Wylfa looks like and can picture its potential for himself.
This is so much more powerful than words alone when I am arguing the case for investment.
My priority for our island is goods quality jobs and I know how important the issue of jobs and careers are to so many readers.
As well as working in Westminster to bring opportunities to Anglesey, I also share local job advertisements via my Facebook page:

This coming Saturday I will be holding surgeries in Amlwch and Benllech. If you would like to see me to discuss local issues, highlight a hidden hero or community shop, or come along and say hello, please contact my office to book a slot.
