Holyhead to welcome 44 cruise ships this year

-

HOLYHEAD port is set to welcome 44 cruise ships this year - with a projected economic boost of £5m.

After a pandemic-hit two years it is hoped that the cruise sector can rebound in 2022.

To help boost the industry in North Wales local people are being recruited as official tour guides to welcome passengers.

Residents will be provided with a fullyfunded bespoke training programme, with a foundation in guiding.

The qualification will allow individuals to become self-employed guides as well as ambassadors for Anglesey and North Wales.

Anglesey Council’s Visitor Economy and coastal areas manager, Gwenllian Owen said: “The cruise ship industry provides Anglesey and North Wales with significant economic benefits. There are around 44 cruise ship visits planned for the port of Holyhead during 2022 with some passengers staying locally and others visiting different parts of Anglesey and North Wales. This generates around £5million to the North Wales economy annually.

“The project provides an important platform to further develop tourism on Anglesey. It will give individuals the opportunity to become official tour guides and share their enthusiasm and love for the Island.”

She added, “We are seeking individuals passionate about Anglesey with a positive and friendly personality – if this is you we encourage you to apply for your place.”

The project is funded by the UK Government through the Community Renewal Fund.

Economic Development portfolio holder Cllr Carwyn Jones said: “This is an excellent opportunity to enhance the visitor experience to our beautiful Island. Our aim is to recruit local residents passionate about their community and Anglesey. This project will benefit residents, businesses and tourists alike. We are confident it will encourage visitors to stay on the Island for longer and spend more money in our local businesses.”

Applications for the roles close at 12pm on Monday February 21.
