Plans for electric car charging stations

-

DOZENS of rapid charging points for electric vehicles could be established across Anglesey in an ambitious programme proposed by the island’s council.

The plan sets out an ambition for 10% of parking spaces at council run services to have charging points provided by 2025, and 20% of spaces by 2030.

Councillors hope the plan will assist in the transition to decarbonise the transport sector in line with Welsh Government’s new transport Strategy for Wales.

The plan was outlined at a meeting of the council’s Corporate Scrutiny committee.

Highways portfolio holder Cllr Bob Parry said the plan will develop new modern electric vehicle charging points infrastructure across the island, available for use by council staff, residents and visitors.

He said the network was vital due to the rapid increase in the number of electric vehicles on the road, and the ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol cars and vans by 2030.

“We already have some charging points but there will be an increasing need for community charging points. We cannot have vehicles charging up on the street with cables running to them from houses,” he said.

Presenting a report to the committee, highways, property and waste service officer Dylan Llewelyn Jones said the council had declared a climate emergency in September 2020 and since then had been looking into how to reduce its environmental impact and meet Welsh Government targets to transition to a carbon neutral public sector.

The committee agreed to allocate £55,000 to undertake feasibility assessments across council run car parks.
