Supporters make a splash

-

MORE than 160 brave supporters embraced the elements and took a plunge in the sea last Saturday at the first ever St David’s Splash.

Despite the cold waters, the sun shone down on the dippers as they ran towards the shoreline at Porth Eirias beach in Colwyn Bay, after the countdown start, on February 28.

On entering the waters with squeals and laughter, they enjoyed the chilly temperature of the Irish sea, which averages 6°C this time of year.

The event was to raise funds for St David’s Hospice, a local charity, caring for local people. It delivers specialist care free of charge to adult patients with life limiting illnesses or those in need of end of life care and their families.

Many of the ‘swimmers’ were in fancy dress including mermaids, daffodils hats and tutus.

So far the morning raised £7,848 with many raising sponsorship for their local hospice.

Prizes were given out for the best dressed team which was won by Moorcroft Mermaids, best dressed individual was won by 12-year-old William Glanville (Panda) and Nia Jones won a prize for the first in the water.

Rhian Jacobs, St David’s Hospice event co-ordinator said: “Many thanks to Bryn Williams at Porth Eirias Bistro who offered a hot drink and cake for all participants.

“I’d also like to thank local businesses Haia, Môr SUP and Commando X-fit who kindly supported the event.

“Also, thanks to St John’s Ambulance and our fantastic volunteers who helped on the day.

“Not forgetting our brilliant supporters who braved the waves, it was great to see so many people come to support this first-time event.

“It was a magnificent morning!”
