Indigo Welsh Premiership

NEWPORT 31 RGC 32

THREE yellow cards, four tries and a late penalty were all part of the drama in which RGC claimed another away win at leaders Newport.

Having beat them in November in the cup, RGC headed south knowing they were unbeaten in the Indigo Group Premiership.

RGC opened the scoring with a Dion Jones penalty, but Newport grabbed the first try after good work down the wing for Geraint O’driscoll to touch down. Matt O’brien added the extras.

Subsequent missed opportunities by the hosts were punished in the 27th minute by RGC.

Jones put a deft kick over the defence for Afon Bagshaw to collect. The ball was worked wide and Zach Clow went over for the try. Jones hit a superb conversion as RGC led 10-7.

Rhys Williams was yellow carded for RGC and minutes later Newport scored with a Matthew Powell try, Matt O’brien converted.

The Newport fly-half then grabbed a try of his own and converted to make it 21-10.

A frantic 40 minutes ended with the Gogs back on the scoreboard as Jones and Bagshaw set up Rhys Tudor.

In the second half Newport got the bonus point try when winger Powell stepped a couple of RGC tackles and touched down. O’brien was again on target.

The Gogs needed to get back into the game and Jones created the opportunity, kicking into space before Bagshaw collected to score. Jones hit the conversion.

Momentum shifted and RGC took the lead when from the maul Brodie Coghlan came up with the bonus point try, Jones kicked the extras.

The last five minutes saw Bagshaw knock the ball on for a penalty which O’brien took to give his side the lead with minutes remaining.

But that was not the end of it, as restart RGC were given a penalty chance themselves and Jones delivered the match-winning kick.
