Nurses trek to mark 2nd anniversary

- Latest on fundraising at St David’s Hospice, Llandudno

ST David’s Day commemorates a very special day for St David’s Hospice. Not only did we celebrate the Patron Saint of Wales, but we also celebrated the second anniversary of opening the Anglesey Hospice in Holyhead.

To mark the anniversary, staff nurses, their families and friends decided to celebrate together by trekking 11miles around Holyhead starting at the Anglesey Hospice at Penrhos and ending on top of Holyhead Mountain overlooking the route we’d just completed.

St David’s Hospice Staff Nurse Jayne Greenough said: “I have been working for St David’s Hospice for nine months now after working in ICU for eighteen years. The staff from our St David’s Hospice Unit in Holyhead wanted to do something to mark the two year anniversary of the unit being opened on St David’s Day so we came up with the idea of a walk around Holy island.

“My husband, Davey Greenough, who is a qualified walk leader and regularly leads mindfulness walks offered to lead the walk and came up with the route. We wanted a bit of a challenge as we felt our doing this would not only raise awareness of the services we offer on Anglesey, but that it would give us a chance to raise much needed funds for St David’s Hospice too.”

Anglesey Community Fundraiser at St David’s Hospice Jane Jones joined the group on the walk: “As soon as I heard the nursing staff talking about this adventure at the beginning of their planning I knew that I had to be a part of it.

“During the walk I was able to talk to those taking part, both hospice staff and otherwise, about the hospice services, in particular those offered at our inpatient unit in Holyhead as marking the anniversary of the units` opening was what had brought us together.

“At the unit we offer care to adults with life limiting illnesses and their families and carers such as respite, symptom control and end of life care. It is important to us at St David’s Hospice to look after our patients` all over wellness.

“In talking to as many people as possible about the Hospice we aim to eradicate any fear our patients and families might fear about coming to see us for the first time.”

The team have so far raised a fantastic £451 for the Hospice. Should you wish to make a contribution, you can do so on this link St David’s Hospice: Holy Island Trek on St Davids day (enthuse.com)

Thank you to the team for their great fundraising efforts and in raising awareness on the vital services offered to the local community.
