COURT HEARS WOMAN WHO’S NOW A LAW STUDENT HAD‘TRAUMATIC EVENTS’ WHILE WORKING FOR A FORCE

Ex-police worker was abusive to an officer while drunk

A STUDENT, who had left her job with a police force due to “traumatic” events, was found drunk at her university. Elliw Jones, 32, was behaving in a threatening or abusive way at Bangor University, a court heard last week.

She pleaded guilty at Caernarfon Magistrates Court to the charge following the incident on December 8 last year. She was fined a total of £120.

Prosecutor Hannah Williams told how at 1.55pm on December 8 a police officer was approached by a member of staff from the reception area of Bangor University. The officer found that the defendant was sitting on the reception desk and was “heavily intoxicated”.

The court heard she smelt strongly of alcohol. Ms Williams said the officer approached Jones and explained who he was.

She replied: “You’re a f ****** pr***”, said the prosecutor. Jones was helped out of the university building but fell over. She was arrested and taken into custody.

Her defence solicitor yesterday said her client, of Mount Pleasant Terrace, Bangor, had had to leave her job with a police force due to “trauma in the force”.

No further details were given.

But she said her client has been struggling with alcohol.

She accepted she was intoxicated on the day in question.

Jones has apologised to the receptionist and would like to apologise to the police officer, said the defence solicitor.

She added that the defendant is a full-time law student at Bangor University.

Jones, who appeared in the dock from custody, also pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to custody and to Caernarfon Magistrates Court for an earlier hearing.

Bench chairman Gordon Browne fined her £80 for using threatening words or behaviour and £40 for one count of failing to answer to bail.

She must also pay £100 prosecution costs and a £48 statutory surcharge.
