Clinical Airbus put 4 past 1876

AFTER kick-off was delayed due to an accident on the A55, hosts Airbus were first to threaten following a quickly taken corner. However, Carl Jones did well to save a powerful low shot from close range.

In the eleventh minute, it was the turn of Bangor’s number eleven Mason Blackwell-jones to have an effort on goal. A neat pass by Joe Sullivan found him inside the box but home goalkeeper Mitchell Jones came out to save well. Moments later a cross from Cai Powell-roberts just eluded the onrushing Corrig Mcgonigle.

Midway through the opening period, Mcgonigle turned provider with a cross from the right but Sam Jones’s glancing header went just past the post.

In the third minute of first half injury time, the hosts had a chance from a free-kick just outside the penalty. However, George Peers’s shot was comfortably saved by Carl Jones and the sides remained level at the break.

In the second period, both sides sought to create openings as the play went from one end to the other.

Nefyn United 3-1 Pentraeth* was the hosts who took the lead. A cross was swung in from the left by Oliver Lanceley and some indecision at the back post allowed Jordan Evans to poke the ball over the line from close range.

Seven minutes after opening the scoring, the hosts doubled their advantage. Following a corner kick, the ball was worked across to the edge of the penalty area where Daniel Collins scored with a low shot.

Midway through the second half, Bangor came close to reducing the deficit. Cai Powell-roberts played the ball across the face of goal where Corrig Mcgonigle’s shot seemed goalbound before Mitchell Jones saved on the line.

Bangor continued to press and forced a series of corners after a shot by Mason Blackwell-jones was deflected into the side netting.

With fifteen minutes left, Corrig Mcgonigle again had an attempt, but his free-kick went just over the bar. Not long afterwards, the hosts extended their advantage when Craig Lindfield cut in from the left and unleashed a powerful shot.

Bangor are back in action on Saturday 13 January when we welcome Chirk AAA to Nantporth for a league game that begins at 2pm.

With the January transfer window open, Bangor 1876 have lost no time making signings, including a welcome back for former player Dion Jones.

The club website confirmed the signing: “Dion Jones has re-joined our club, further bolstering our squad during a busy start to the transfer window. He will be familiar to many 1876 fans as he played for us at the start of our debut season before leaving due to work commitments.

“Dion was part of the academy at Llandudno before moving to Chester, where he captained their youth side. He is a versatile 23 year old player who can operate in both midfield and defence. Dion has recently played for Llandudno Junction.

1876 have also signed Dale Davies from fellow JD Cymru North side Chirk AAA, noting that means that he joins Bangor 1876 from a club founded in 1876!

Davies has been a regular with Chirk in tier 2 over the last two seasons, and played a major role in helping them to gain promotion to the JD Cymru North. In 2021-22, he scored 19 goals in only 22 league appearances in the Lock Stock Ardal Northeast.

Michael Johnston said: “It’s great to welcome Dale to 1876. He’s a player I have played with before and I know he will be a huge asset to us. He will offer something different going forward and I’m looking forward to working with him as a manager and a coach now.”

In the Ardal North-west, Llangefni Town battered Saltney 6-2 to stay within a point of second place – Saltney had led early on and the match was still poised at 3-2 on 88 minutes before a remarkable final three-goal blitz by Llangefni. Holyhead Hotspur led at Pwllheli at half time through a Cory Williams strike but left emptyhanded after the hosts netted twice late on

ABERYSTWYTH Town manager Anthony Williams missed seeing his side break out of the JD Cymru Premier relegation zone for the first time this season as he was away for the 1-0 home win over fellow strugglers Colwyn Bay.

Despite having Mark Cadwallader sent off in the 41st minute, the Seasiders conjured up a goal within 24 seconds of the restart to take a lead they would never lose.

Alex Darlington attempted to chip the goalkeeper from outside the penalty area and his effort came back off the crossbar. Liam Walsh followed up and with the keeper stranded on his backside on the goal line, he tapped in from eight yards out.

“It’s all about Alex Darlington, who pulls off magic like that all the time,” said Walsh. “After his chip, all I had to do was tap it in.”

Cardiff Met had the distinction of being the last side to beat reigning champions The New Saints last season, but they paid for their proud boast as they were humiliated 8-0 at Park Hall as TNS went 15 points clear at the top.

It rained goals at the home of the champions after the visitors lost Lewis Rees to yet another red card – the sixth of the season for the Archers. Ryan Brobbel hammered home the ensuing penalty in the 31st minute to break the deadlock and by the break it was 4-0.

“We dominated the game and had a few chances even before they lost a player, but it was all a bit false after the red card,” said TNS boss Craig Harrison.

“I’m not getting too carried away with the result.”

Brobbel got a second and Brad Young also bagged a first half Brace. Young went on to complete his hat-trick in the second half to make it 14 league goals for the season – and the perfect celebration of his 21st birthday.

Adrien Cieslewicz piled on the agony after the break with a fifth and then Young added his third.

Just when the students thought things couldn’t get any worse, Harrison took off Brobbel and replaced him with his top striker Declan Mcmanus.

It took the Scottish front man a mere four minutes to join the party as he made it 7-0 before Rory Holden completed the rout.

This was the game in hand that Harrison’s men held over second-placed Connah’s Quay Nomads – and they certainly made it count.

Two first-half goals from Ben Blythe – his first for the club and his first in professional football – set Barry Town United on their way to their most convincing win of the season as they beat Newtown 4-0 at Jenner Park.

They head to Aberystwyth Town this weekend to complete their Phase 1 fixtures.

Newtown had hoped to pick up three points to overtake Bala Town and move into third, but they were stunned by Blythe’s brace and then taken apart after the break.
