Quick loo stop cost elderly driver £170

-

AN elderly driver who stopped to quickly use the bathroom ended up with a demand to pay £170.

Raymond Roberts, 82, from Penmaenmawr, parked in Bangor but immediately needed to go to the loo. Mr Roberts set off to urgently find one but realised it was too far away, so he returned to his car.

When the former magistrate, who set up Drapers Carpets in Llanfairfechan, returned, he found he had already been given a £60 ticket from UK Parking Control, his daughter Llinos Roberts said.

Ms Roberts claimed a man who gave her dad directions to a toilet was the person who issued him with the fine. She claims the man apologised and advised Mr Roberts how to appeal.

After multiple letters and requests for payment from a debt collection agency, the family say they were told the appeal was now out of time. Ms Roberts said: “UKPC issued him with a £60 parking ticket on the 27th August 2023, whilst parked outside The Range in Bangor.

“My father has several health issues, one of them being that he needs to use rest rooms often. Once he parked at The Range and not realising that the store had on site facilities, he started walking towards KFC. Once he realised how far away KFC was he turned back and noticed a gentleman in a high vis jacket. My father asked if he could direct him to the nearest public convenience.

“The gentleman was very helpful and explained he could use the one inside The Range. My father thanked him and started to walk back, when the gentleman asked if the silver Megane was his, my father confirmed it was his car.

“The man apologised, and said he had given my dad a ticket as he had seen him walk away from the car park. He gave my dad a card with details on how to appeal.”

Ms Roberts said UK Parking Control Ltd asked for payment, and they appealed, with a response from the company asking for more evidence. They since received letters from a debt collection agency demanding £170.

Ms Roberts said: “This has caused my father huge stress and anxiety.”

UKPC could not be contacted for comment.
