Kane to miss start with injury that ‘doesn’t look great’

-

HERBIE Kane is due to miss the start of Barnsley’s season with a groin injury which ‘doesn’t look great’.

Midfielder Kane withdrew from Saturday’s friendly against Nottingham Forest after feeling a problem in his groin in the warm-up.

Head coach Michael Duff told the Chronicle: “He has had a scan and we’re waiting for the results.

“It doesn’t look great. He won’t be fit for the start of the season.

“It’s frustrating for him and for everyone. I really liked him at Oxford last year. It’s disappointing. But if he’s injured, he’s injured, we just have to crack on and cope.”

After the Forest game, Kane told the Chronicle: “It’s just precautionary.

“I didn’t want to make anything worse. I thought it was better not to play and hopefully be ready for the start of the season.”

Kane has so far started six league games and come off the bench in 18 for Barnsley since his 2020 move from Liverpool.

He has had injuries but also found himself often out of the side under Valerien Ismael, whose direct style did not suit him, then loaned out to Oxford United in League One last season.

He played 35 games for the Us before a groin problem ended his campaign then returned to play friendlies for the relegated Reds this summer under Duff. Kane said: “It’s been really good. “I have enjoyed it.

“I am enjoying it under the manager and I am happy working with him. Hopefully we can have a good season.

“I haven’t played as much as I wanted since I’ve been here, or I haven’t played in a style or a way where I can express myself.

“Hopefully this season I can do that and show the fans want I can do and help get the team promoted.”

Meanwhile, Clarke Oduor has been out with a hamstring problem but has returned to training this week.
