Insight into health jobs for pupils

- By Jack Tolson

PRIMARY school pupils across Barnsley are to be educated about careers in health and social care thanks to a pioneering programme.

The Jobs for Everyone programme, launched by the school engagement team at NHS South Yorkshire, will introduce reception and year one kids to more than 20 different roles in health and social care. The scheme was spearheaded by Caroline Boot, the primary school project lead at South Yorkshire Integrated Care System, back in January 2020.

It was delivered to two schools before the pandemic, but since its relaunch more than 40 schools have signed up to the scheme.

The Astrea Academy, which has four Barnsley primary schools under its wing, are getting involved with the programme.

Catherine Carruthers, director of careers, guidance and student leadership at Astrea Academy Trust, said: “It’s an exciting time for careers education within our primary schools across Astrea we’re thrilled that NHS South Yorkshire is delivering Jobs for Everyone at Astrea primaries.

“At an early age, we are proud to challenge stereotypes and widen every child’s awareness of all the opportunities available to them.”

Caroline Boot, who is leading the programme, added: “While we’ve seen this kind of educational support for older children, this is the first we know where it is tailored towards reception and year one pupils.

“We often find that by years five and six, preconceptions around job roles have already been formed and we believe it is important to challenge these stereotypes and ensure children keep open minds.”
