- By Emily Phillips

THE first ever Darton East Ward Alliance volunteer award scheme is set to take place this year.

Nominations are underway for the scheme, recognising those who contribute to improve Mapplewell, Staincross and the surrounding areas.

Winners will be celebrated at the DEWA ‘Making a Difference’ award ceremony on September 30 at Mapplewell and Staincross Village Hall.

Nick Hibberd, manager of the venue, said: “In the Mapplewell and Staincross district there is a real community spirit where people care about the area and those living and working in it.

“Many of the volunteers that are involved with these schemes will give up their own time willingly, week in and week out, to support these projects that have a major impact on those around them.

“These volunteer groups and individuals are those that we are wanting to recognise and applaud for making a difference.”

There are 11 categories in total including community event of the year, outstanding contribution to art and culture, ‘good neighbour’ award and volunteer of the year award.

To put forward a nomination collect a form from the Mapplewell and Staincross Village Hall, Darton Lane admin office or the DEWA North Team Offices at The Danon Centre, Huddersfield Road.

They a re also available via email at northteam@barnsley.gov.uk or by calling 07741 168811 for more information.

The deadline for nominations is 5pm on September 2, and nominators should make sure to include their contact details, as well as those who they are nominating, and why they deserve to be nominated in their category.
