‘The perfect driver has never been born...’

- GEOFF WAKE Woodland Rise, Silkstone Common

Some forty plus years ago I took a course on class one heavy goods vehicle driving and also passed the test.

One of the sayings of the lead instructor was ‘the perfect driver has never been born and their mother is dead’.

I can now contradict this as he or she has been found in J Danks of Kexborough.

I note that the actual section of road was not mentioned. I myself have travelled every route possible between these two destinations and there are very few stretches that it would appropriate to do the national speed limit of sixty miles per hour.

I too have a dashcam fitted and you can guarantee every time I take the car out there will be an incident that would warrant prosecution by the police and it is getting worse with almost every case a younger person is involved.

If you check with insurance companies it is from this age group where the majority of claims are made.

We have all been young and think we are invincible, it is only natural but if J Danks reaches the age of sixty or sixty five, they may change their mind about having to take a test. Perhaps they could also tell the pension office that we are all past it at sixty, then the pension age might drop.

No one would want to be responsible for harming another person through being too old and incapable to drive.

Knowing the time to give up is always going to be a problem.

Maybe a medical check after a certain age would be a good idea – if you could find a doctor.
