Going, going, gone... The story of Oliver’s hair

-

OLIVER McMahon vowed to grow his hair for the two years leading up to him starting secondary school so that he could help make wigs for cancer patients.

Then aged just nine, Oliver made the decision in memory of his great grandma Marlene who had relied on wigs when she left the house after losing her hair while undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer.

Oliver, who celebrates his 11th birthday on Sunday and starts at Horizon Community College in September, finally had his hair cut last week by local hairdresser Amanda Williamson and he has not only donated 15 inches of hair to the

Little Princess Trust but has also raised £1,190 for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Mum Toni, of Carrwood Close, Worsbrough Dale, said: “Oliver loves a challenge and he has also done other fundraising activities including Kids’ Tough Mudder.

“While his great grandma was ill, he saw that the wigs made her feel more confident and from then, he just wanted to grow his hair.

“Now that he has done it and had his hair cut, he loves his new hairstyle and I am so proud of him for what he has done to help people with cancer.”
