Cadden doesn’t care about his performance in debut defeat

-

NICKY Cadden would rather have had a poor Barnsley debut and won than impressed in an opening day defeat.

The 25-year-old Scottish left wingback, who signed a two-year deal in the summer after leaving League Two champions Forest Green Rovers, started the 1-0 loss at Plymouth Argyle.

He was one of the Reds’ only impressive performers, crossing for Jack Aitchison who hit the bar and sending in an injury-time corner which was cleared off the line.

He said: “We created good chances, myself and Jordan Williams on the right. It’s just about getting used to other players, hopefully getting more people in the box then I am sure goals will come. On another day we could have won it 3-1. We had the better chances in the game but everyone knows we weren’t at our best.

“It doesn’t matter if I play well or badly, we got beaten. I would rather play bad and get three points.

“We got beaten but the gaffer doesn’t like to stew on it too much. He gave us a few tips but then we moved on.”

Cadden had not completed a full game in pre-season after signing midway through the summer but played all 90 minutes in Devon. He said: “It was great to get the minutes in the legs.

“It’s the first 90 minutes I have played in three months. I came in late and was a bit behind the other players. But it’s good to get ready for the season.

“The gaffer asked how I was feeling during the game and I felt good.

“I expected to feel worse. After the game, I felt bad and my legs were gone but during it I felt good. Once I get up to speed, I think it will be a good season.”

Cadden is now set to make his home debut for the Reds tomorrow against Cheltenham Town, whom head coach Michael Duff left earlier in the summer.

“He won the league with them and knows most of the group. He will give us a good insight into how they play and all the players, what their strengths and weaknesses are.

“We will focus on that and hopefully have a good result on Saturday.

“It’s the first home game of the season and hopefully we send the fans home happy. I am excited, my girlfriend is excited. It will be a good game and we want three points.”
