Energy excuses

- MICHAEL SMITH, Falmouth Close, Monk Bretton

A few months ago it was reported that the energy price cap was going to be changed every three months instead of every six months.

If the cost dropped, people would get the benefits quicker, but I said it would just give them an excuse to increase bills four times a year instead of twice.

Now they are going ahead with this change it means the price going up in January, in the middle of winter, but if Ofgem hadn’t interfered bills wouldn’t have gone up in winter months and would go up in April as normal.

The price cap being done quarterly needs putting back to April to give people a chance of getting through winter.

Most people can’t afford to pay the price increase in January and pensioners – without savings

– are going to be left with approximately £5,000 to live on for 12 months of the year.

Therefore they won’t be able to use adequate amount of heating, leading to excess deaths from heart attacks and strokes.
