MP’s praise for work of college during visit
A BARNSLEY MP attended Northern College alongside an education boss.
Miriam Cates, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, attended the site – at Wentworth Castle – with Alice Wilcock, head of education policy at The Centre for Social Justice.
They spoke with ‘inspirational’ principal Yultan Mellor and some ‘equally inspiring’ students to get an insight into how the college has supported them.
Ms Cates said: “Northern College is one of just two residential adult education colleges in the country, and it has an incredible record of helping people who need a second chance to turn their lives around.
“As deputy chair of the social justice caucus in Parliament, I engage regularly with cabinet ministers and colleagues on a wide range of issues like family policy, education, criminal justice, and work and welfare.
“It was great to have the opportunity to see how policy we discuss in Westminster links to the important work going on in communities likes ours across the country.
“I look forward to keeping up to date with Alice’s work, and will continue to keep in touch with Yultan and students at Northern College to see how they are getting along.”
