Maya and Vanessa win northern golds while Felton is second in 215-mile Scottish race

BARNSLEY AC’s Maya Schofield and Vanessa Ndambakuwa won gold at the Northern Championsh­ips in Liverpool.

Competing in the 800m, Maya ran a personal best of 2-20-39 to take first place. Vanessa won the under 15 200m in 25.95 with club-mate Leah Finch fourth in 26.6.

Barnsley AC’s Woody Felton completed the Race Across Scotland at 2.44am on Monday morning. The 215-mile ‘ultra trail race’ starts from Portpatric­k and follows the Southern Upland Way over mountains, along valleys and through forests, finishing in Cockburnsp­ath. He finished joint second in a time of 68 hours, 42 minutes and 37 seconds.

Penistone Footpath Runners enjoyed success in the latest round of the English Fell Running Championsh­ips in hot conditions in Bradwell.

First back for the club was Phil Montgomery in 36th with 47-01.

Ray Brown claimed first place in the men’s over80 age category with 1-21-23.

In the men’s over65 category, Steve Storey was third in a time of 56-00.

Becky Timms claimed sixth position in the women’s over40 age category.

In the men’s over45 age category, Damian Kilpin finished tenth with 48-03.

At the Denis Stitt Fell Race,

Penistone’s Tom Fryers won the men’s under 21 category in 36-42.

Other category winners were Jon Hallam (men’s over45 in 41-28), Becky Timms (women’s over40 in 46-26) and Barbara Haigh (women’s over75 in 57-55).

There was a second place for Helen Wright in the women’s over40 category with 49-40.

Two Penistone runners picked up third places in their age group – Steve Storey in the men’s over65 with 45-59 and Mark Graham in the men’s over55 in 50-02.

Paul Fryers finished ninth with 46-15 in the competitiv­e men’s over50 category.

Penistone’s Dave Napier competed in the Indian Queens Half Marathon in Cornwall. He finished in 1-44-51.

Barnsley AC’s Jenny Wakeman headed up to Newcastle to compete in a sprint duathlon as part of the Try on the Tyne event. This consisted of a 5k run, 20k bike ride and a 3k run. She was ninth woman overall and first over60 woman in 1-19-28.

At the Newark Half Marathon, Barnsley AC’s Gareth Cooke was ninth with 1-14-09. Naomi Drakeford finished in 1-36-31 and Paul Fieldsend in 1-43-51.

David Thompson was the first back of 11 Barnsley Harriers at the Askern 10k Road Race, finishing 21st overall out of 210. Despite the very hot conditions, four Harriers recorded new personal best times for the distance. Thompson knocked 3-49 off his previous best time, Mark Rawnsley was another 1-22 faster, Neil Armitage 21 seconds quicker and new member Anna Gaughan made her debut at the distance.

Janet Heeley was first over75 woman and Vikki Skipper second over65 woman.

Dean Winter was first Barnsley AC runner and second in the over45 category.

Other second place category places went to Lydia Race (over35 woman), Vicky Shaw (over40 woman), Kevin Manley (over70 man) and Dave Allemby (over65 man).

Elsewhere, two Barnsley Harriers ran the 7.1-mile Salt Cellar Fell Race near Sheffield. Kieron Brice finished 75th in 1-21-33, with Caroline Batty 105th in 1-3420, to claim third women over40.

Penistone’s James Mumford claimed first place at the Bowling Park ParkRun in 17-35. Peter Cross notched up his 100th ParkRun at Penistone.

Barnsley AC’s Keith Littlewood finished first at the Depot Park ParkRun in Florida and set a new over50 course record of 18-47.

Meanwhile, back at the Barnsley ParkRun, Dave Allemby helped ‘pacemake’ ten-year-old twins Aliza and Zunaira Chavan to PBs by almost two minutes at only their second 5k race.
