Rec look to build on derby win over Bridge

-

ATHERSLEY Rec hope their first win of the season at home to Worsbrough Bridge in a Barnsley derby will kickstart their Division One campaign.

Lee Garside the former Worsbrough player, netted in the 38th minute of the first meeting of the clubs for nine years.

The game was played in front of 387 fans which was by far the biggest crowd in the NCEL that weekend. Rec are now 16th with four points from seven games while Bridge are second-bottom with three points from six.

Rec manager Jimmy Whitehead said: “It was a good win and much-needed.

“We deserved it, we battled well and limited them to just a few chances.

“We have played better this season and lost but the first goal was big.

“It was a typical derby and a blood and thunder game.

“There were nearly 400 fans so it was a good decision to move it to the Friday night. Hopefully a lot of those fans come back and watch us after seeing us win and really fight. The crowd definitely lifted the players.

“We have said we have not got the points we have deserved this season.

“We will gain some more belief from our first win and clean sheet.

“We play teams near us in the table in the next few fixtures.

“If you win two or three quickly, suddenly
