Penistone show returns for 149th occasion

-

PENISTONE Agricultural Show returns this weekend for what should have been its 150th celebration.

Due to the pandemic, the show was cancelled two years ago but returned last year for the 148th time.

Taking place at Penistone Showground, from 8am until 8pm, a plethora of entertainment is on hand. There will be an array of animals, crafts, vintage vehicles and competitions for those who attend to enjoy.

Rebecca Barnett, the show’s secretary, said: “This will be the 149th annual Penistone Agricultural Show, and we are really looking forward to another fantastic day.

“It takes huge effort by all of our team, who are 100 per cent volunteers, to put on this event each year, but we do it because we are proud to promote our local agricultural heritage.

“This event really does offer a value for money day out.”

■ This weekend’s pig event at Penistone Show will be ‘one of the best’ in the UK, according to organisers.

Lee Dunkley took over the running of the pig section at the Penistone Show following the difficult period of the pandemic and lockdown.

He has since rebuilt the whole section from scratch.

Lee will be welcoming 50 pigs from all around the country, and will also be hosting the Berkshire pig breeders ‘Champion of Champions’.

The judging is expected to start at around 9am and will continue with various classes throughout the day.

The public will be allowed access into the marquee at intervals between classes, and full access once judging has been concluded.

There’s also going to be a ‘piggy art table’, giving youngsters the chance to create pictures of their favourite pigs.

The championship and crowning of the supreme champion of the show will be awarded at around 2.30pm.
