The visitors took the lead just after an hour but, six minutes later, in-form Tommy Graham levelled from a fine pass by Graham Pugh.

One of two occasions in this era when Barnsley fans flooded the Oakwell pitch, thinking they were in the play-offs, only to find out they were not. David Currie converted an 86th-minute penalty for handball given by the linesman, either side of two late Pompey red cards. But Swindon had beaten Stoke 3-0 to overtake the Reds.

Neil Redfearn, who had been on the transfer list at his own request all season, secured this win after his midfield partner Brendan O’Connell opened the scoring.

Reds 1, Pompey 0 – November 25, 2000

Dave Bassett was weeks away from being sacked as Barnsley manager but saw his side grind out a 1-0 win over Steve Claridge’s visitors. Bruce Dyer scored a superb winner from an extremely tight angle.

Reds 2, Pompey 0 – February 18, 2012

Keith Hilll’s Barnsley would eventually stay up thanks to a points deduction for debt-ridden Portsmouth. Jim O’Brien and Matty Done netted. The Reds would win just one more game all season.
