Having a cuppa earned charity £39k last year

- AMY HEBDON, Macmillan Cancer Support’s relationship fundraising manager in Barnsley

At Macmillan Cancer Support we know that people living with cancer and their loved ones face more challenges today than most will ever have experienced in their lifetimes.

Cancer diagnosis and treatment are tough enough, but 2022 has brought spiralling household bills on top of the estimated £1,000 additional costs per month of going through cancer.

Add in lengthening waiting times arising from the post-pandemic treatment backlog and the picture becomes starker still.

Macmillan in Barnsley is doing whatever it takes to make sure every person with cancer gets the help they need be it financial, practical, emotional or psychological. But we need your help to do this.

I’m asking you to sign up now, if you can, to hold a Macmillan coffee morning (register at www. coffee.macmillan.org.uk) or by attending one in the local area.

Last year, our generous coffee morning hosts across the UK raised more than £11 million with £39,000 coming from Barnsley alone.

Your actions in gathering friends, family and colleagues together over a brew and a cake at your home, workplace, school, community centre or open space for September’s Macmillan coffee morning meant we could directly support the 1,420 people in Barnsley who are diagnosed with cancer every year.

Macmillan Coffee Morning donations helped us give a grant to 206 Barnsley people worth a total of £72,350.

What’s more, our Macmillan Support Line service took calls from 379 people in Barnsley who needed our immediate support.

And this year Macmillan has committed £30m to fund vital welfare benefits services across the UK including Barnsley.

In addition our Macmillan Information and Support Service Centres across the UK continue to provide vital face-to-face counselling, advice and support to anyone affected by cancer at any time in their lives.

Thank you to every one of you who will either hold or attend a coffee morning this September to help us support the three million people living with cancer in the UK.
