Athersley car blaze Upgrade work could create 10,000 jobs

-

A CAR was deliberately set alight in Athersley on Tuesday night.

A fire crew from Cudworth station were called to Darley Close, at 10.07pm, to extinguish the blaze.

They left the scene at 11.02pm.

UPGRADING homes with energy efficient measures in Barnsley would create almost 10,000 jobs across the town, a new report has claimed.

The Institute for Public Policy Research says retrofitting homes with good insulation and heat pumps would bring a total of 9,827 jobs to Barnsley.

The £7bn per year scheme is a ‘no-brainer’ to create jobs, boost growth, reduce energy bills and meet net-zero targets, according to the institute.

The plan would see more than 2,600 jobs created in Barnsley East, a 10.6 per cent uplift in the area’s total job market, and would see a 6.1 per cent increase and create 2,436 roles in Barnsley Central.

More than 2,400 jobs – and an uplift of 6.9 per cent – would be made in Wentworth and Dearne, whilst 2,360 at a nine per cent increase in Penistone and Stocksbridge.

Luke Murphy, associate director for the energy, climate, housing and infrastructure team at the IPPR, said: “It’s time the government acted and invested to upgrade our nation’s homes, making them warmer and more affordable.”
