Budgets to be watched closely Marathon mission is for worthy cause – MP Dan

-

COUNCIL bosses have warned councillors to stick to their budgets amid fear of the cost-of-living crisis.

In a meeting earlier this week, council leader Sir Steve Houghton told councillors to be aware of the crisis the nation is facing, and to be sure to keep an eye on their expenditures throughout the winter months.

He said: “We need to keep our budgets tightly controlled.

“This does not mean stopping the work you are doing, but we need to stick to the budgets.”

With bills rising, the council have thought about using one-off plans to allow projects and services delivered by the government running smoothly.

He added: “We may find ourselves using one-off solutions for this year, but they are not long-term solutions, though. We must continue in the best way we can.”

The council are working on ways they can reduce their costs to ensure they are not overspending.

Despite the warning, council bosses are confident they will manage throughout the crisis as the winter months come and energy bills rise.

Sir Steve added: “The confidence I do have is that we as a council do make difficult decisions when we have to.

“We will do everything we can to make sure expenditures are kept under tight control for the rest of the year.”

ON Sunday October 2, I will once again be dusting down my trainers and running the London Marathon to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Slightly worryingly, I haven’t done much training, but I say that every year!

While the challenges of the last few months have made any kind of training regime almost impossible, when I have found time to get out for a run, I’ve been fortunate enough to have a personal trainer alongside me.

I have to admit that this has been quite an expensive undertaking, and he doesn’t always do exactly what I want him to do, but I can’t knock his commitment and passion for running.

Whatever the weather, he drags me out. His name is Juno – my springer spaniel!

Next Sunday is going to be a long, hard slog. It always is. There are no short-cuts! However, what will hopefully (fingers crossed!) get me round the course is the knowledge that I’m running for an incredibly important cause – and one that is very close to my heart.

All of us will know someone who has been affected by cancer; and sadly one in two of us will be diagnosed at some point in our lives.

I know from my own experience, the pain and devastation that cancer causes to families who are affected and it’s important to me personally that I play my part in the fight against this awful disease.

I hope that by running for Cancer Research, I can not only raise money for vital research, new technology and enhanced patient care, but also to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis, improving screening uptake and talking to a GP if you have concerns.

Currently just over half of cancers are detected in their first stages. So, if you notice any changes or something that’s not quite right – please get it checked out.

That particularly applies to all the stubborn Barnsley blokes out there who are notoriously bad for not bothering to go and see their GP.

Our remarkable NHS workforce play a vital role in treating those with cancer, caring for patients and helping to

THE Duran Duran Experience will be coming to Barnsley tonight.

They’ve been established as the country’s premier Duran Duran tribute ease the burden on families. I hugely value their work, but I know the huge pressures they’re under.

Our NHS are still grappling with the secondary impacts of the pandemic; a backlog in cancer services, a devastating number of missed cancer referrals and delays in starting treatment.

Locally, these issues are affecting Weston Park Cancer Centre. Weston Park is crucial to our region and one of only a handful of specialist facilities in the country that provides dedicated patient care. Every day staff are working to save people’s lives, but it desperately needs an upgrade.

That’s why I’ve been doing all I can in Parliament and pushing ministers to fund Weston Park’s £50m investment and renovation plan. If implemented in full it will deliver cutting-edge innovation in treatment and will help save thousands of lives in Barnsley and South Yorkshire.

Charities like Cancer Research are vital in the fight against cancer. As part of my fundraising, I’m looking forward to visiting the wonderful staff at our local Barnsley Cancer Research store.

The staff are doing great work during these difficult times, providing good-quality products at an affordable price and all donations support the charity’s extraordinary research.

I know times are tough, but I’ve been blown away by the generosity people have shown.

If you are able to support me in this fight, I would be incredibly grateful for any donations to my Just Giving page.

Thank you so much for your support, I really do appreciate it.
