FAMILY and friends of Carlton man Ralph Slater gathered on August bank holiday Sunday to pay tribute to him with a memorial walk.

The group met at Carlton Park before setting off on the canal walk from Carlton to Wintersett, which Ralph had researched for Royston Local History Group.

Ralph, who died earlier this year, aged 90, was interested in walking and history throughout his life and his family and friends thought it would be a fitting tribute as well as making people aware of their local history.

Along the route, walkers exchanged memories of things which Ralph had done and his daughter, Sue Burton, said that these made the occasion enjoyable and meaningful.

The youngest walker was his great grandson, Oliver.

A collection for Cancer Research raised £300, thanks to generous donations by members of Carlton Bowling Club.
