George keeps up the family tradition with Trunce victory

GEORGE Parr, of Penistone Footpath Runners, was crowned the overall series winner of the Trunce series which has now concluded.

He finished fifth in the final edition and keeps up a fine family tradition as he is the grandson of Dave Cartwright, a former athletics champion (pictured inset).

Tadek Kunicki-Holda won the junior competitio­n and was second in the final race. Graihagh Turner was the first junior female back.

Sarah Halstead came out on top in the over50 women’s bracket and Barbara Haigh was best over70 woman.

There were second place spots for Penistone’s Damian Kilpin (over40) and Ray Brown (over70) and Sarah Plummer was third over50 woman.

Penistone’s James Mumford was 16th at the Bradford 10k after breaking the 35 minute barrier by a second. He was also third over40.

Two Barnsley Harriers ran too with Nigel Bradbury (V50), 498th in 54.17 and Deborah Dearden (LV60), 976th in 72.27. There were 1,100 finishers.

Penistone’s Dawn Broom sliced 82 seconds off the over55 club record over five miles at the Bassingham Bash.

Her time of 35.18 also earned her top over50 at the race.

Ben Malcolm was first over40 at the Chatsworth 10k in 39.48. Andrew

Heppenstal­l was second in the same age group with 39.57. Martin Ball’s 42.01 was enough for third in the over50 runners.

Malcolm Rose set an over65 male course record at the Torbay Velopark event with 19.31. It also earned him 11th spot. Second places were claimed at various park runs by Penistone members. They were Tom Fryers (Brighhouse), John Lawcock (Nant y Pandy) and Chloe Worth (Penistone). Flynn Rogers won the junior Hillsborou­gh park run.

Barnsley AC duo Michael Slack (17.00) and Lydia Race (18.36) earned new PBs at the York 5k.

Keith Littlewood, also of Barnsley AC, set a over50 parkrun record at Alderley Park. He was third overall with 18.34.

There was also a new PB for Lee Spensley at the Humber Coastal half Marathon. He ran 1-40-39.

Gail Colville was seventh female and second over 55 with 1-40-39 and Roy Hart, in 1-56-54 was first over70.

Several Team Barnsley members competed at the European Duathlon Age Group Championsh­ip in Bilbao, Spain.

Jenny Wakeman competed in the Sprint Distance which involved a 5k run (23.47), 20k bike (45.18) and a 2.5k run (13.22), finishing with a silver in the over65 female category.

Wakeman’s overall time was 1.27.50. Barnsley AC second claim Katie Roberts also took on the sprint distance finishing eighth over40 female in 1-20-29.

David Thompson was seventh over45 male in 1-08-41 and was the fastest on the bike leg. Robert Elstone took part in the Standard Distance Duathlon. He completed a 10k run (42.36), 40k bike (1-08-54) and a 5k run (21.48) to finish eighth over55 male in 2-18-32.

Barnsley Harriers were also busy over the weekend with Simon Haywood taking part in the 60-mile Hardmoors run.

The race starts at Guisboroug­h along the Cleveland Way and finishes in Filey. He was 29th overall with 14-03-41. Harrier Caroline Batty had a good run at the hilly Shepley 10k road race, finishing second lady over 45 in 56.19 for 54th place overall. After the four legs of the Huddersfie­ld Road series, Caroline finished first woman over 45.
