Wath go top but Barnsley hammered 71-5 Barnsley Women keep hold of top spot
LOCAL rivals Wath and Barnsley are at opposite ends of the table following comprehensive results last weekend.
Wath, traditionally strong at home, swept aside Northallerton 37-5 to move to the top of Yorkshire Two.
Barnsley, who had to forfeit their first game back at this level due to a lack of players, were hammered 71-5 at Yarnbury and are anchored to the bottom of the table with -5.
Wath also got the try bonus point with Joe Earp, Ben Cairns, Joel Gunn, Steve Mason and Alex Roebuck all crossing over.
Fly-half Jack Whitlam added two penalties and three conversions along the way.
Wath travel to Bramley Phoenix tomorrow and Barnsley are set to face Harrogate Pythons away.
BARNSLEY Women dropped points but remain the league leaders following a 2-2 draw at Merseyrail FC.
Nat Shaw levelled the game up at the break after latching onto Becky Gompertz’s pass.
Jodie Michalska put Barnsley ahead in the second half but the home side levelled directly from a corner. Barnsley remain three points clear at the top of the league and are unbeaten.
Manager Lois Daniels said: “It’s been a strong start to the season for us, with five games unbeaten and some impressive performances and three clean sheets.
“We’ve relished challenges and really built a strong culture and environment as a group.
“It’s fair to credit Mersey Rail for a gritty and organised performance.
“We found it challenging to break down their 5-3-2 with ten players behind the ball.
“We did create several opportunities, that just didn’t fall for us on the day, including frustratingly three penalty appeals.
“The result was a tough one to take, we conceded two goals from a penalty and straight in from a corner, apart from that we conceded one shot on target all game.”
