BARNSLEY karate stars enjoyed success at the Commonweal­th Games in Birmingham this month.

The karate competitio­n of the Commonweal­ths is a separate event to the multi-sport event held earlier in the summer also in Birmingham.

The sport is attempting to gain selection for the full games.

The five-day event was attended by members of Barnsley Karate Centre, Cawthorne Karate Club and Team Shindo Kai.

Shoany Hudson was part of the England squad in the blind and partially sighted section, winning a bronze as the team topped the medal table.

Shoany’s daughter Steph Hudson won a silver in the blind and partially-sighted section in the club level championsh­ip which followed at the same event.

Jonny Burden won under 11 kata gold. Other Barnsley competitor­s were

Jack Furniss, Ben Furniss, Morgan

Jones, Reece Barradell, George Morley, Leighton Copping, Caleb Fallis, Arthur Calverley, William Cresswell, Alfie Hyko and Jake Li.

Coaches for the five days from Barnsley were John Tumman, Paul Barradell, Chris Leather and Rob Traves.

Overall, Shindo kai Karate came 14th in the medal table.

Coach John Tumman said: “It’s an absolute credit to the town for these athletes to work so hard for this competitio­n for weeks.”
