Private renters ignored by politicians

- JOHN TOWNEND, address supplied

Private renters feel ignored by politicians yet research by homelessness charity Shelter shows that our views on housing will influence the next general election.

To give a local example, in Barnsley Central, 53 per cent of private renters say housing policies will be a factor when deciding who to vote for. As the cost-of-living situation nationally increases it is important to think about the private rented sector of housing. Barnsley residents renting privately could suffer extreme rent rises in the next few months.

The government must do something to help those renters before rising debt levels place them in jeopardy of loosing their homes. Years of promises to reform our broken renting system are meaningless until changes become law.

The government must bring forward the Renters’ Reform Bill.
