Wheels of justice grinding slowly

THE shocking backlog of outstanding cases at Sheffield Crown Court has been revealed.

Statistics from the Ministry of Justice shows there were 1,270 outstanding cases at the court at the end of June – many of which are linked to Barnsley.

Of these cases, almost 30 per cent are related to alleged violent attacks and 13 per cent were for sex offences, including 33 alleged rapes.

It’s up from 1,238 at the end of March and 1,123 at the same point last year.
