Ladies hope for promotion challenge after win

-

BARNSLEY Ladies believe they can compete for the title after they won 5-3 at home to leaders Handsworth in the North East League Southern Division.

The visitors went 2-0 up but Charley Evans scored from 35 yards then Lyn Goodman and Jodie Gregory put Barnsley 3-2 up. Handsworth levelled with a penalty but Ellie Newsam and Goodman secured the win.

Barnsley are up to third, with two wins from three games, and visit Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

Coach Jess Horsley said: “I think we have shown that we can compete for the league this season – a couple of arrivals have put us up there.

“The game was a tough one, but we dug deep, didn’t get drawn into a long ball game, and it paid off.

“Handsworth were sitting top of the league and we knew if we could get three points, it would put us in a great position with some key games coming up throughout October.

“The first half wasn’t the best, but we came out for the second half a different team and that showed with the amount of chances we created.”
